Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov met with Togo’s Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Chairman, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, in Bishkek on August 31, with both sides signaling interest in expanding bilateral ties.

The meeting took place during Gnassingbé’s visit to Kyrgyzstan for the opening of the VI World Nomad Games and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s “SCO+” meeting.

Japarov said Gnassingbé’s official visit to Bishkek in April had given fresh momentum to political dialogue and opened new areas for bilateral cooperation. He added that Kyrgyzstan considers Togo a promising partner on the African continent.

The two sides also discussed cooperation at international organizations. Japarov thanked Togo’s leadership and people for supporting Kyrgyzstan’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2027–2028, describing the backing as a sign of trust and friendly relations between the two countries.

Gnassingbé said Togo attaches particular importance to strengthening ties with Kyrgyzstan and sees significant potential for expanding trade, economic and cultural cooperation. He also reaffirmed Togo’s commitment to close coordination with Kyrgyzstan at the United Nations and other international platforms.

The two countries have maintained diplomatic contacts while exploring opportunities to broaden cooperation beyond political dialogue. Their latest meeting points to a growing interest in developing economic and institutional ties between Central Asia and West Africa.
