The Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania are moving to strengthen economic ties, with trade, critical minerals, infrastructure and regional security at the center of a new round of bilateral cooperation.
President Felix Tshisekedi and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan agreed on August 18 to revive their Joint Standing Commission and explore a strategic partnership on critical minerals, including the exchange of geological data.
The two countries also discussed joint oil and gas projects and plans to improve road, lake and rail connectivity. Particular attention was given to the Central Corridor linking the DRC to the Tanzanian ports of Dar es Salaam and Kigoma, as well as the port of Kalemie on Lake Tanganyika.
The leaders also welcomed progress on a cross-border fiber-optic connection between Kigoma and Kalemie.
Security remained part of the discussions, with Tanzania reaffirming its support for the DRC's territorial integrity amid continuing instability in eastern Congo.
