Cross-border security tensions between Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR) have escalated significantly following a lethal joint operation near their shared frontier.

Chad reinforced its military deployments along its southern border following an October 10 airstrike executed by CAR military forces backed by Russian troops in the Vakaga region, Journal du Bangui reported on 19 October.

Chadian authorities reported that several of their soldiers were killed or wounded when CAR forces crossed the border during the assault. In response to what it termed a violation of its territorial integrity, N'Djamena formally summoned Bangui's ambassador and mobilized additional forces along the boundary.

CAR’s Defense Minister defended the offensive as a pre-emptive measure intended to thwart an impending, large-scale attack by foreign mercenaries.

A Russian military source claimed the airstrikes successfully targeted hundreds of insurgent fighters assembled near the tri-border area connecting CAR, Chad, and Sudan, killing at least 60 rebels.

The troop concentration has raised widespread fears among local populations of a wider regional conflict. Concurrently, regional forces are struggling to manage insurgency along the Lake Chad Basin.

According to the Institute for Security Studies, Cameroon's Defense Ministry established a specialized Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR Lake Chad) unit comprising 1,000 troops stationed at newly inaugurated military bases in Hilé-Alifa and Bargaram.

The deployment follows severe violence by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram factions that recently displaced over 11,300 residents across the northern region.

While Cameroon's 1,000-strong BIR unit aims to disrupt militant logistical channels and protect displaced communities, analysts warn that military outposts alone cannot guarantee stability without seamless international cooperation. In addition, counter-terrorism efforts across the Lake Chad region continue to face operational hurdles due to overlapping domestic military commands and difficult marshland terrain.
