Uganda is seeking to expand tourism’s role in economic development as it pursues a tenfold increase in the size of its economy by 2040.

The country’s tourism potential and employment opportunities were discussed by Ann Kalembe, founder of Gazelle Safari Company, during the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in Baku on October 27.

Kalembe said tourism is among the priority sectors in Uganda’s economic strategy, alongside agriculture, mineral resources, science and technology. She also highlighted the sector’s role in employment and called for greater opportunities for women in tourism and hospitality.

Uganda’s Tenfold Growth Strategy aims to increase the country’s gross domestic product from approximately $50 billion in 2023 to $500 billion by 2040.

The discussion in Baku brought Uganda’s development priorities into an international forum focused on intercultural dialogue.
