TotalEnergies is calling for long-term investment, stable regulatory frameworks and country-led energy strategies to expand access to affordable and reliable energy across Africa, according to Mike Sangster, the company’s Senior Vice President for Africa.

Speaking at African Energy Week (AEW) 2026 in Cape Town, Sangster highlighted the continent’s role in global energy security and the need for stronger partnerships between governments, investors and industry to turn energy ambitions into tangible progress.

“Africa has a unique role to play in strengthening global energy security while developing its own economies for the benefit of all Africans,” Sangster said.

TotalEnergies Highlights Investments Across Africa

Sangster pointed to TotalEnergies’ investments in Mozambique LNG, Namibia’s offshore sector and projects in Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa. He emphasized their potential to strengthen energy security, create jobs and support local economic development.

The projects reflect the range of opportunities and challenges facing Africa’s energy sector, from developing natural gas resources and offshore oil production to building infrastructure capable of supporting long-term economic growth.

For governments seeking to develop domestic energy resources, predictable regulatory frameworks and sustained investment are important considerations. Partnerships between public authorities and private companies can help advance projects, while the broader economic benefits depend on implementation, local employment and opportunities for domestic businesses.

Sangster’s remarks placed investment conditions and national energy priorities at the center of the discussion, underscoring the need to translate the continent’s resource potential into expanded energy access and economic activity.

AEW 2026 Concludes in Cape Town

African Energy Week 2026 runs from October 12 to 16 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, bringing together government officials, energy companies, investors and industry decision-makers to discuss investment opportunities and partnerships across Africa’s energy sector.

As an Official Media Partner of AEW 2026, Africa Monitoring is following the event’s discussions, with a focus on energy investment, project development and opportunities relevant to Central Africa.

The event’s broader significance will depend on whether discussions and investment proposals translate into financing agreements, projects reaching implementation and expanded access to reliable energy across the continent.
